Scouting offers many opportunities for you to lead. The longer you\u2019re in the program, the more others will look to you to step up. But how do you become a good, responsible leader who commands respect from Scouts and adults alike? Here are a few tips:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Keep your word.<\/strong> If you say you\u2019ll do something, do it. If you don\u2019t know if you\u2019ll be able to keep a promise, don\u2019t make a promise. Your words won\u2019t mean much when you don\u2019t follow through consistently with your actions.<\/p>\n \u2022 Communicate and delegate.<\/strong> Treat your troop as your team, not as your subordinates. Share your plans or challenging situations with them rather than keeping it all to yourself. Someone else could have a good idea for how to tackle a problem. Assign tasks to take pressure off yourself and to empower your team.<\/p>\n \u2022 Be fair.<\/strong> You might want to rely on your friends, but showing favorites can create resentment. Be empathetic and treat everyone the way you\u2019d want to be treated.<\/p>\n \u2022 Give praise and encouragement.<\/strong> Let your troop know you value their help and effort. Simply saying \u201cgood job\u201d can go a long way.<\/p>\n \u2022 Ask for help.<\/strong> You don\u2019t have to do everything yourself. Adult leaders can provide guidance; fellow Scouts can provide support. You\u2019re not a failure if you fail.
