He wanted young people to have the tools to face challenges. With that in mind, our goal is to be able to help our fellow executives to be prepared for a successful membership campaign this fall.<\/p>\n<p>Councils refer to Join Scouting Night by different names. Some use the term Sign-up Night, Open House, etc. For purposes of this article, we\u2019ll use the term Join Scouting Night. If your council uses a different term, simply insert that term wherever you see Join Scouting Night (JSN).<\/p>\n<p>Having a great Join Scouting Night (JSN) training is another key to success! During recent conversations with Scout Executives who experienced growth in 2018, many of them attribute their success to the execution of their membership plan. Below are some areas to consider when preparing for this fall.<\/p>\n<h3>Join Scouting Night Prep<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Council\/districts\/units \u2013 <\/strong>Calendar planning should include JSN training dates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Council\/district market analysis \u2013 <\/strong>District Executives\u2019 utilizes it to prepare the <a href=\"https:\/\/41zfam1pstr03my3b22ztkze-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2019-Growth-Plan-Workbook-1-15-2019-V3.xlsx\">District growth plan. <\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Units\u2019 membership points of contact <\/strong>\u2013 District Membership Chair collects points of contact for all units.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unit inventories <\/strong>\u2013 District Membership Chair, Unit Commissioner, and unit leaders should participate in completing the unit leadership and membership inventory, which should help determine the unit\u2019s needs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unit mapping \u2013<\/strong> This process will help you determine the number of people needed. You can map your units in <a href=\"https:\/\/scoutingwire.org\/maps.google.com\">google maps<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/batchgeo.com\/\">batchgeo.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Communication<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>VP of membership\/council<\/strong> communicates with all Districts\u2019 Membership Chairs on JSN training dates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>District membership chair<\/strong> communicates and educates all units the importance of attending the JSN training and sets expectations that \u201ceach unit needs to send at least one delegate to the training,\u201d according to Trey Smith, district director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southplainscouncil.org\/\">South Plains Council<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Who should be involved in the development of the JSN Training? <\/strong>Professionals and volunteers \u2013 Membership VP, District membership chairs, and anyone else involved in membership.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Who should attend the unit JSN Training? <\/strong>Unit Membership Chair or Point of contact, New Membership Coordinators, and any other leaders involved in recruiting new members.<\/li>\n<li><strong>When should the JSN training be offered? <\/strong>Every council is different; therefore, timing will be slightly different. However, many councils offer the JSN Training\/Kick-off for their Membership Chairs between May-July. JSN training for units should be scheduled before school starts, May-August. Many districts utilize August roundtable to deliver the JSN unit training.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Components of JSN Training<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Purpose of the Join Scouting Night<\/li>\n<li>Agenda for the JSN<\/li>\n<li>Tasks before and after the JSN<\/li>\n<li>Materials needed for a successful JSN<\/li>\n<li>Script and\/or presentation for the JSN<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>JSN Pitfalls <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having the meeting when other meetings\/events are scheduled.<\/li>\n<li>Using too much Scouting lingo.<\/li>\n<li>Having a disorganized meeting with no clear direction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Best Practices<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make the training simple, interactive, and informative where the volunteers can walk out with confidence and positive outlook.<\/li>\n<li>According to Trey Smith, District Director of the South Plains Council, one of the keys to having a successful JSN is to ensure that unit volunteers provide their new families with key information such as: a brief intro, contact info, meeting times, place, cost \u2013 without overwhelming them.
