We’ve told you about the Zia Experience, a new program at Philmont Scout Ranch designed to help Scouts who have special needs more fully enjoy high-adventure activities there. Philmont isn’t the only high-adventure base hosting this adaptive program: Registration is open for the Keys Experience at the Sea Base.
In late March, Scouts and their families can attend the program, part of BSA Family Adventure Camp, at the Sea Base’s Camp Sawyer. As with all Family Adventure Camps, families can choose where they’ll camp — traditional sites or in luxury deluxe tents. And with all Family Adventure Camps, families can enjoy many of the high-adventure activities that Scouts do. At Sea Base, that means snorkeling, fishing, boating, visiting a sea turtle hospital and helping in a coral restoration project.
Families will be able to create their own schedules and choose which activities they’d like to do. The BSA’s National Special Needs and Disabilities Committee members will be at camp to help support these activities.
The Zia Experience launched this summer, inviting a small group of Scouts and their families to Philmont for a week of hiking, shooting and horseback riding, among other activities. The idea was born a couple of years ago to help make the high-adventure base more inclusive.
BSA Family Adventure Camp, which started in 2018 at three BSA high-adventure bases, including the Sea Base, was the ideal place for making that happen. Families could attend with their Scouts, helping guide them through the life-changing experiences the bases offer while enjoying them as well.
At the Sea Base, you can register here for the Keys Experience, slated for March 21 to April 1, 2022. Registering by Dec. 15 will guarantee the 2021 prices. Sites are reserved exclusively for the Keys Experience until that date. After submitting a registration form, a member of the BSA National Special Needs and Disabilities Committee will reach out to discuss your family’s needs.
