Scouting U is offering a number of online and in-person courses to help prepare employees and volunteers to deliver a memorable, effective Scouting program.

Succession Planning: The BSA is dependent on our many volunteers to provide the best possible experience for Scouts. The goal of succession planning training is to educate current volunteers on how to recruit new leaders, and provide a smooth transition to those new leaders stepping into their new role. The Succession Planning learning plan consists of four modules, ranging from five-11 minutes in length. [For more information on specific modules, please see ScoutingU Succession Planning.pdf.]

Program Safety: The safety of all youth participating in Scouting activities is a BSA priority. Program Safety courses prepare leaders to recognize various risks, hazards, and accidents that may happen while delivering the Scouting program. [For more information on specific topics covered, please see ScoutingU Program Safety.pdf.]

Both the Succession Planning and Program Safety courses are available around-the-clock on the BSA Learn Center by logging in to your My.Scouting account.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO): Cub Scout leaders interested in adding a camping component to their pack activities are required to have at least one BALOO-trained adult on every Cub Scout den or pack overnight outdoor event, including pack camping and Webelos den overnighters. BALOO training sets a unit up to carry out a successful camping experience for Scouts.

BALOO training is comprised of two components: an online section, and a practical, hands-on component. Both must be completed to qualify as a “Trained” Cub Scout outdoor leader, and to receive the BALOO recognition patch. The new BALOO syllabus is now available online. This new syllabus combines both the Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) and Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWL) previously used. The online portion of BALOO is available around-the-clock on the BSA Learn Center by logging into My.Scouting.org.

As always, Scouting U continually strives to provide content you need — when you need it.
