Training has a very large impact on the quality of your unit’s success and your personal growth as a Scouter.   The District urges all leaders & parents to become trained.

  • Leadership and confidence are critical to success in Scouting and life. The Middle Tennessee Council and the Trail of Tears District offer various training programs so you have the skills, the knowledge, and the experience it takes to help Scouts learn to make the most of their opportunities.
  • The BSA training mandate requires “top unit leaders” – SMs, CMs, Varsity Coaches, Venturing Advisors, Skipper and Explorer Advisors – be fully “trained” for their registered position, effective 01-01-11.

Outdoor Skills

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) This training will provide Cub leaders the necessary knowledge and skills for a pack to be able to go Family Camping in the Middle Tennessee Council. Each pack is required to have a BALOO trained individual on any family campout.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (OLS) for Boy Scout Leaders

Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters and Varsity Scout coaches. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in the Boy Scout Handbook.

Philmont

Philmont National Training Center

Serving as the only national volunteer training center for the Boy Scouts of America since 1950, the Philmont Training Center (PTC) provides a unique environment for the training of volunteer and professional leaders. Each year, more than 6,000 Scouters and family members attend PTC.
